I saw the electric green stripey thing behind me and I immediately have to know what it is. I decelerate so they can catch up and soon I can tell it’s a Viper. I am also going 5 under the speed limit and they are not closing the distance to me eventually I just give up and drive at 5 over and I lose them until I turn off. I wait for them to go by and it produced virtually no sound.

Sounds like someone’s picked up a few too many tickets and is now gun-shy.

Yeah, 5 under is pretty safe.

I actually just got stopped for the first time a couple of weeks ago in the wagon. I’m pretty certain I either blew out a cat or one of the MDS solenoids is failing because I pulled over after hearing a pretty loud banging sound. Cop rolls up behind me, but he can’t say he pulled me over (because he didn’t, I pulled over before I even saw him). He tried telling me I was doing 60, I was more shocked he didn’t hear the same noise I did.
I’m not really gun shy after it, but the noise is making me hold back significantly. Nothing like a broken car to keep you out of trouble.

Nah. Chrysler actually had to stop letting employees take SRT vehicles out in their once-a-year personal use program due to multiple Viper deaths.

An older guy in my town has a 1st gen viper and a 15 viper. He drives both at 5 under all the time.

I don’t understand the point in having a Viper if this is how you drive it. They aren’t particularly nice or comfortable to be in.

Maybe they track the cars or go for spirited drives elsewhere away from civilian streets. Better than blasting through at obscene speeds and endangering those around them I say.

5 under = obscene.

I drive like this.
A) nothing to prove. At all.
2) don’t need a ticket. At all.
D) do need to fight the DB factor associated with my car brand, so I’m polite to a fault.
This guy is clearly not compensating for anything. Maybe he’s just an adult?

At 5 under? GTFAC!
Also, I don’t believe you have nothing to prove.

Huh.
You know, come to think of it, it’s been probably about a year or so since I last saw an M-plated Viper on public streets...

Maybe not the whole 5 under, but I tend to be under rather than over. No tickets, and I don’t want any.
As far as nothing to prove, my car is what it is. It’s good at some things, worse at others. Decently quick. I’m not going to race a Civic Si just to prove I’m faster, nor a 5.0 Mustang. I’ve got four kids. I don’t need to risk getting my car impounded to protect my fragile ego.
And I don’t have anything to prove as a driver, either - especially on the street. No ego here. Powershifting is hard on the car, pushing too hard and going off at the track is hard on the car. Even just pushing hard wears out brakes and tires. And since I have to pay for what I use / break, I mostly try to drive like a grandma. I just replaced my second clutch at 204k miles - pretty decent for anything out there, much more for a performance car.

Maybe not the full 5 under, but under more than over.
I don’t have anything to prove as a driver. Especially on the street (since street racing is incredibly stupid), but even on the track (where my experience pales in comparison to most the guys I know). I’m the only one I know with an interior and no roll cage in my E36.
And the car has nothing to prove. It’s almost 20 years old, faster than normal cars but far slower than any modern performance car on the street. Hell, a Golf R gives me serious trouble. I know exactly how it would do in any stoplight matchup. So no need to risk my license. And since I have to pay for consumables and things I break (money + time), I take it easy on track.
The car is just like me. We are what we are. Trying to be a little better all the time, but no ego, nothing to prove.
